to assuage which 型の関係詞② (続編？)

前回、to assuage which 型の関係詞としていくつか私が見つけたものをまとめてみましたが今回は、to 不定詞にだけに留まらず ”動名詞の意味上の主語”を担う関係詞を見ていきたいと思います。今回も文脈をあまり考慮せずに切り抜く形で使用させていただいております。あくまでも参考程度に。。。

これは Sir David Cairns というイギリスの法律家である方がとある裁判で発言したとされる英文であり、この書籍もその記録から引用しているものと思われます。この英文に限ってはただ彼の考えを述べた内容であり文脈を考慮せずとも一応内容はある程度理解できるのではないでしょうか。 

本題は下線部の部分です。恐らく the chance of A ～ing 「Aが～する可能性、見込み」という表現はかなり有名ですが、今回の場合はその動名詞の意味上の主語を示す A の部分が 関係代名詞になっているように見えます。正直この類の準動詞に伴う関係詞がどこまで容認されるかは自分もよく分からないです。ともあれ結構面白いのでまた何か興味深いものを見つけたら更新していきたいと思います。

2023年 東大和訳 as young as one day old について

今年の東大和訳、これは盲点になりやすい項目だと思うので簡単にではありますが書きます。第4問Bの イ の問題です。

The power of sugar to soothe appears to be present from the very beginning, with effects demonstrated in those as young as one day old.

問題は those as young as one day old の部分です。those は人々を指し、 those who are as young as.... の意。そして as young as 、これは as...as を用いて後に続く語句を強調させるもの。
 Ex) This palace was built as early as the 13th century.
この as early as は「 同じくらい早くに」と訳すのではなく、「早くも～に」 のように訳すのが適切。結果的に 13th century という早さを強調してることになります。これと同じで as young as はその後ろの若さを強調してることになりますが、ここも割と厄介です。しかし問われてることは所謂中学レベルであり蓋を開けてみれば極めて基本的な内容、東大らしい出題だと思います。この one day old は 構造的には I'm nineteen years old と同じ。この場合形容詞 old は期間を表わす語と一緒に用いて 「～歳の、年を取った」という意味で、nineteen years は所謂名詞の副詞的用法(副詞的目的格)というものです。つまりこの数字が old を修飾してどの程度年を取ったのか明確にしています。問題の one day old も一緒で、直訳で「一日年を取った」(変ですが) つまり「生後一日」と訳すのが適切だと思います。このことから、as young as が続く one day old という若さを強調し、その塊が those に後ろから修飾して、(意訳を通して）「生後わずか一日の赤ん坊」という意味になります。

to assuage which 型の関係詞

たびたび SNS上で話題になる to assuage which について、これは慶應大学 文学部 2000年 の英語にて出題されたもので、 

"To stop writing, not to write, is now unthinkable－or perhaps it is the secret fear to assuage which one goes on writing.　(Why Do I write? 1986 David Lodge)"

下線部の部分の和訳を問う難問でした。要は関係詞が to 不定詞ごと前に移動する現象というわけですが、ほとんどの受験生や英語学習者には馴染みがないものだと思います。in which や from which などがよく知られている形ですが to assuage which も原理はこれらと同じです。It(=to stop writing, not to write) is the secret fear. To assuage it(＝the secret fear), one goes on writing. この二文が関係詞によって繋がれています。

本題ですが、私がこのタイプ(to 不定詞を伴った)の関係詞を調べていく中で見つけた英文をメモがてらいくつかここに置いておこうと思います。 GoogleBooks などで全文または一部公開されているものです。専門的な内容から引用しているものもあるので参考になるか分かりませんが。。。

①同じ to assuage which だが形容詞的用法(恐らく)

③副詞的用法

④名詞的用法 (endeavour to doの同格)
"The dream of the alchemists, in the vain endeavour to realise which they exhausted their lives and dissipated their wealth, had its foundation in a natural truth. これらを調べていく中で実感したことはやはりどれも古い英文だということです。調べきれてないものもたくさんあると思いますが、私が見つけた限りではどれも19世紀に書かれた英文でした。どれも難解な英文ばかりです。
①についてはあまり自信がないです。形容詞用法であればその名詞との結びつきが強い印象があるのでなんか切り離してしまってる感じがします。「その渇きを和らげるためのほんの少しの水滴すら与えない」といったような訳になると思うのですが。。。わからん。
